About Charlie

Drawn to consequential moments

Charlie Kim speaking on digital disruption

What energizes Charlie is not activity for its own sake, but meaningful progress, the kind that reshapes institutions, unlocks potential, and endures beyond a single cycle. For over 35 years at Bain & Company, he advised CEOs, boards, and investors through precisely those moments: industries navigating disruption, technological change, ownership transitions, and large-scale transformation.

He co-founded and helped scale Bain’s global Media & Entertainment practice, later serving as Co-Head of the Technology, Media & Telecommunications practice in the Americas. Over his career, he worked closely with more than 50 executive teams and numerous boards across media, technology, and telecommunications, and partnered extensively with private equity sponsors across 100+ diligence and post-acquisition value creation engagements, translating investment theses into executable plans under real operating constraints. His client work has spanned North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

Today

Charlie serves as a board member and independent advisor to C-suite executives, continuing to support leaders navigating consequential change. He is also an active angel investor, working closely with founders building technology-driven businesses through the earliest stages of leadership, strategy, and organizational development. Charlie also serves as an Executive Fellow in the Strategy Unit of Harvard Business School's MBA program, where he works alongside established business thought leaders and the next generation of business leaders.

His work, whether in the boardroom, alongside senior executives, or with founders, is grounded in decades of pattern recognition, but animated by a simple belief: progress becomes possible when clarity, courage, and disciplined execution come together.

Working style

Working with Charlie is collaborative in the fullest sense. He engages deeply with the people, the context, and the complexity before reaching a view. But the engagement is in service of clarity, not comfort. The clients who find him most valuable are usually the ones navigating a moment where the right answer and the easy answer have stopped being the same thing.

Leadership & talent development

A parallel thread through Charlie’s career has been the development of leaders. He led Bain’s Experienced Partner Training program globally for nearly a decade, one of the firm’s largest investments in its own senior talent, through which hundreds of Bain’s most senior partners have trained. He has mentored dozens of colleagues who have gone on to senior partner roles, C-suite positions, and investment leadership. He continues that work through his Harvard Business School fellowship and his direct engagement with early-stage founders. He believes the quality of leadership around a strategy matters as much as the quality of the strategy itself.

Early formation

Long before his professional life, Charlie learned the discipline of performance. Admitted to The Juilliard School at six years old, he trained as a classical violinist and competed and performed across the United States, including as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic. Music instilled composure under pressure, preparation without shortcuts, and an appreciation for both precision and interpretation. Those lessons have remained constant.

Governance perspective

Ambition and stewardship, held together

Effective governance sits at the intersection of ambition and stewardship. Boards must set direction, oversee risk, and shape leadership, while preserving the clear boundary between oversight and management. Independent judgment, delivered constructively, is essential.

Charlie currently serves as an Independent Board Director of Symmatrics, an innovative cybersecurity company providing a unique solution to the AI-fueled cyber and post-quantum threats.

"Durable value is built through rigorous choices made at the right altitude, coupled with even more disciplined governance to ensure follow-through."

Expertise

Where the work lives

Charlie's advisory sits at the intersection of four domains, built over decades of hands-on client work, not theoretical frameworks.

Technology, Media & Telecom

Deep sector expertise across the full TMT landscape: from Fortune 50 media and telecom enterprises to early-stage technology challengers, across content, distribution, enterprise software, and B2B information services.

Where others present options, Charlie forces choices: grounded in data, stress-tested against reality, and specific enough to act on.

Private Equity

Led or advised 100+ diligence and post-acquisition engagements with top global PE and growth equity sponsors. Works closely with sponsors, boards, and management teams on value creation, execution, and exit readiness.

Charlie’s diligence goes beyond market sizing, customer interviews, and expert networks, to the operating assumptions and management thesis that determine whether the deal thesis survives the first year.

AI & Digital Transformation

Practical experience architecting GenAI strategy, governance, and organizational models, including $1B+ AI-enabled business plans and large-scale AI deployment across enterprise operations.

Charlie has seen enough transformations stall between strategy and execution to know the document is rarely the problem, and he designs the implementation and change management accordingly.

Large-Scale Transformation

Guides Boards and top executives through the hardest kind of change: restructuring, M&A integration, and ownership transitions. Track record of impact spanning cost, growth, and organizational redesign.

His counsel is calibrated to the question that matters most: are you governing the company you have, or the one you think you have?

Services

How we work together

Most relationships are retained advisory engagements: a standing cadence, access on demand, and periodic deep-dives when the stakes are highest. Selective by design; built to last.

Engagements are built around sustained relationships, not deliverable volume. Charlie works with a small number of clients at a time. Deeply, not broadly.

01

Retained Advisory

An ongoing strategic partnership with direct access to senior-level counsel. For CEOs and Boards who want a trusted outside perspective embedded in their most consequential decisions, available when it matters most, not just when engagements are scheduled.

02

Board Service

Independent board directorship or senior advisory board membership. Brings strategic depth, PE fluency, and management credibility to governance, particularly through moments of transformation, ownership transition, or technological disruption.

03

Targeted Counsel and Support

High-intensity engagement around specific strategic events: M&A integration, strategic repositioning, leadership transitions, or capital events. Structured for impact, not duration, with seasoned judgment that accelerates and de-risks execution.

Who Charlie works with

Charlie works with a selective group of clients where the fit is real and the stakes are high. Engagements are not transactional. They are built to last.

Corporate

C-suite executives & Boards

Companies at genuine inflection points, including strategic repositioning, growth acceleration, major operational reinvention, or ownership transition, where leadership wants a seasoned, independent counterpart who tells the truth and stays through the hard part.

Investors

PE, growth equity & family offices

Sophisticated private investors seeking deep strategic diligence support, operating partner-level engagement with portfolio companies, or a trusted ongoing advisory relationship across the investment lifecycle, built on 100+ PE diligences across a wide range of industries.

Founders & Entrepreneurs

Early-stage founders

As an active angel investor, Charlie works closely with founders building technology-driven businesses, supporting them through the earliest stages of leadership, strategy, and organizational development. Engaging at formative moments keeps him close to emerging innovation.

From those who’ve been in the room

“Over fifteen-plus years, through every economic cycle and major industry challenge, Charlie was there for us. Every engagement touched something that mattered to our company’s future. To have a trusted partner who isn’t afraid to deliver tough messages, stands behind his recommendations, and brings the kind of judgment you want in the room when the decisions are hardest — that’s genuinely rare.”

CEO, Multi-$B Marketing Services and Technology Company

“Having worked with Charlie on multiple engagements spanning six years of high-velocity change in our industry, I can say with zero hesitation that he is genuinely one of the most sincere and experienced thought partners I’ve encountered in my career. Charlie has mastered the art of listening before guiding, and he has a remarkable ability to distill highly-complex matters into practical takeaways and actions. He’s a gift to any leader who’s fortunate enough to lean on him for insights and wisdom.”

CEO, Leading Sports Media & Tech Company

“Charlie doesn’t operate like an outside advisor — he becomes part of the team in the best possible sense. He brought a rare combination of strategic and analytical depth with pragmatism to a major marketing strategy and operating transformation, but what I remember most is how quickly my team came to trust his judgment. He helped make us better, not just more informed.”

CEO, Premium Content Curator and Distributor

For those navigating a significant decision, Charlie is occasionally able to facilitate a conversation with a former client where the fit and the moment warrant it.

Insights

Perspectives on strategy,
leadership & consequence

These are the questions I find myself returning to across years of working with senior executives and boards: why capable leaders miss what's coming, how organizations stall at the moment they most need to move, where conventional strategic wisdom fails in practice.

I'm trying my hand with two series. The Long View is published monthly: longer-form essays on strategy and leadership, drawn from 35 years of firsthand work with CEOs and boards. Charlie's Shortz will appear roughly quarterly: sharper, faster takes on a single idea or observation worth naming. Maybe even a little amusing (or at least less soberly described).

Both are written to be useful, not comprehensive. I'd rather give you one clear lens than a framework you'll never use.

If something resonates, or doesn't, I genuinely want to hear it. Every piece has a feedback section, and I read every response.

Rebuilt the company’s digital presence, transitioning a formerly free streaming service into a scaled freemium offering. A rare full-cycle engagement, from strategic diagnosis through sustained operating impact, across a business wrestling with the early disruption of digital audio.

Technology & Information Services

Global B2B Information Services Provider

Corporate strategy
Go-to-market transformation
New platform launch · $10B+ enterprise

Defined corporate and go-to-market strategy for one of the world’s leading providers of professional information services, a $10B+ enterprise serving financial, legal, and professional markets globally. Shaped a sales model transformation designed to deepen share-of-wallet in large enterprise accounts. Scaled and orchestrated the launch of a new product platform built to compete with entrenched incumbent solutions in core professional markets. An engagement at the intersection of information services strategy, enterprise sales architecture, and competitive repositioning, a deliberate reminder that the underlying strategic challenges transcend any single sector.

Private Equity

Growth Equity Fund: Hypergrowth Technology Diligence

Strategic diligence
$10B+ AUM fund
Frontier technology sectors

Served as a retained due diligence partner to one of the most successful growth equity funds in the United States, a firm with well over $10 billion in assets under management, focused on hypergrowth technology opportunities at the frontier of what was commercially possible. Informed investment decisions across an unusually wide range of emerging categories: self-driving commercial vehicles, carbon offset markets, cybersecurity infrastructure, vertical farming, global meal delivery platforms, robotics, and others. Each engagement required rapid construction of a credible commercial view in a sector with limited precedent: assessing market size, competitive dynamics, management quality, and deal thesis integrity under the time pressure of a live transaction. The work demanded both intellectual range and the discipline to reach a clear point of view quickly, in domains where certainty was structurally unavailable.
